Thesis Development and Origination: Water Infrastructure Services Sector

Genesis Advisory advised a PE Fund to develop its investment thesis in the Australian water infrastructure services industry, before running a deal origination mandate that produced over 30 qualified platform opportunities.

THE PROBLEM

Identify the most attractive sub-sectors within the Australian water infrastructure services market and generating a live pipeline.

OUR APPROACH & SOLUTIONS

Sub-sector evaluation, target universe scoping and full origination mandate execution

Sub-Sector Evaluation Framework

Origination Mandate Execution

  • Evaluated sub-sectors using a framework covering key investment drivers and fund preferences
  • Assessed B2B exposure, fragmentation, recurring revenue, margins, scalability, barriers to entry and vertical integration potential
  • Conducted desktop research and expert interviews to prioritise six of ten classified service lines, including effective and synergistic combinations
  • Built target lists across priority service lines and approached targets directly
  • Managed the end to end process from initial engagement, managing RFIs, analysing the provided data, term sheet drafting, negotiation, diligence coordination and IC materials

THE RESULT

Screened c.1,150 potential targets, contacted 403, progressed 169 to calls, held meetings with 60 — presenting over 30 qualified opportunities to the PE Fund.

Genesis gave the PE Fund clarity and focus on which parts of the water infrastructure services market to target, providing clear guardrails for capital deployment. The mandate converted a broad investment interest into a structured pipeline, culminating in over 30 qualified platform opportunities presented to the client.
